This species has been treated in Athyrium on account of its highly dissected leaves and sorus shape (Stolze 1994, Flora of Ecuador 49: 89). However, perispore architecture and rachis-costa architecture support its placement in Diplazium (Sundue & Rothfels 2013, Ann Bot (2014) 113 (1): 35-54.doi: 10.1093/aob/mct247).
