Fue descrito como abundante en Nicaragua por el francés explorador e ingeniero Pablo Levy en 1872( Notas Geográficas y Económicas de La Republica de Nicaragua, página 183) Lo describe como un eficaz anti veneno efecto que los nativos no conocían. Los campesino lo llamaban palmichito. En México y Brasil se usaba para las mordeduras de serpientes venenosas usando la raíz hervida y mezclada con aguardiente.
