Hemidictyum marginatum is characterized by elongate sori each with a single lateral indusium and anastomosing veins with a submarginal collecting vein. The large 1-pinnate leaves and pinnae with clasping bases are also characteristic. Formerly often considered to be closely related to Diplazium and the other Athyrioid ferns, molecular evidence supports Hemidictyum as sister to the Aspleniaceae.
